Job Summary:

The Director of Underwriting will provide leadership and coordination of underwriting for North American Bancard. This position is responsible for overseeing the credit adjudication process for all applications, including new account management, existing customer management, and manual adjudication units, and will develop prudent underwriting processes and procedures to support overall corporate objectives.

This role will also focus on excellent customer service to retain merchants, and will be instrumental in managing and reporting portfolio trends and maintaining appropriate levels of risk, working closely with leadership in establishing and maintaining credit policies and procedures for North American Bancard.



Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Management of the underwriting function at NAB which includes new applications and merchant reviews for those merchants managed by the portfolio review team.
  • Managing the process of high risk merchant applications being reviewed and recommended for approval by the NAB’s Internal Credit Committee, provided proper mitigation is in place to control risk.
  • Handling the escalation process to ensure that stalled or improperly adjudicated applications are expedited, and all stakeholders are properly informed about issues.
  • Accountability for Credit Metrics ensuring that timely, accurate and meaningful reporting on SLAs, Deficiencies, Approvals and Volume is available to executives.
  • Ensuring existing counterparties with larger exposures are credit reviewed in accordance with credit policy, and that credit risk is an integral component of the review and that the decision-makers have full knowledge of the inherent credit risks.
  • Responsible for ensuring NAB understands the historical loss data within NAB and that we have an effective communication between Underwriting, Fraud, Risk, Chargeback and Collections on merchant losses and an ability to segment to aid in recognizing and mitigating risk for our entire merchant portfolio.
  • Ensure that the risk is identified, assessed, mitigated, managed and reported upon within the segment and documented so as to meet regulatory and audit requirements
  • Recruit and develop an expert team of risk professionals.


Job Requirements

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics, Commerce or Statistics
  • Minimum of 7 years of experience with progressive responsibilities for Underwriting and Risk Management
  • A demonstrated track record of having managed significant portfolios as well as key projects that have impacted the life, growth and evolution of those portfolios.
  • Experienced in communicating with senior management, peers, employees and the external community and a strategic leader that is currently successfully managing a team of individuals in the area of credit and risk management
  • Post graduate degree with a CPA or CFA designation preferred
  • Payment processing industry experience preferred


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Strong technical credit and analytical ability, with a focus on the knowledge of the acquiring/payments industry.
  • Excellent communication skills (verbal, written and presentation) to convey factual and conceptual information on complex issues.
  • Successful negotiation and influencing skills to manage client groups internally and externally.
  • A strong team player with the ability to develop relationships and partnerships cross-functionally.
  • A creative and forward thinker who understands the bottom line requirements of the organization.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage change.
